Sound at Work: Research Studies on Office AcousticsWhen office noise levels do not align with preferences and expectations, negative mood and stress can build resulting in degraded professional performance and interaction with others. Although professional acousticians are regularly hired to optimize the soundscapes of office workplaces, this resource is for interior designers so that they are aware of relevant research studies that address office acoustics, a hot topic for discussion in workplace design.
In the Lab: Transform Grant Research
Interior design transforms environments in ways that improve human outcomes. Interior designers are ethically, socially, and environmentally responsible professional who design, renovate, and provide design services that transform built environments. The ASID Foundation is proud to recognize all the Transform Grant recipients and their work below.
3C Design: Tools for Designing Connected, Collaborative, and Creative WorkplacesTo develop guidelines that ensure successful workplace development, 3C design assesses levels of connectedness, collaboration and workplace creativity facilitated by the workplace using strategic self-reports and advanced sociometers. This study includes the development of the 3C design research framework with an expert in a series of case studies with diverse scenarios (all-day/multi-day charrettes, a large open office for college library technical support groups, ASID headquarters) that focus on employee experience of the workplace and attitude toward the organization in relation to 3C. Stand Up to WorkStand Up to Work evaluates behavioral changes in office workers who receive adjustable workstations (AWS) that allow them to shift between standing and sitting, compared to workers with traditional desks. Using a randomized controlled trial where half the participants were randomly selected from one floor to receive AWS and participants on other floors maintained traditional desks, questionnaires and brief real-time polling were used to track the office workers’ health and wellness behaviors. The polling and questionnaires measure sedentary behavior, perceived stress, and ongoing behavior changes before installation of the AWS and at three months, six months, and twelve months following installation. Healthy Building Network. Building Green – Materials Research CollaborativeChemicals released from interior finish products into the built environment can have profound impacts on human behavior ranging from reduced comfort and productivity for building occupants, to long-term genetic damage that can affect future generations. Interior designers have had to rely upon a patchwork of green product certifications and LEED credits to guide their efforts to create healthy interior environments. Some of these tools have proven to be inadequate and frustrating for designers who are bombarded with a growing array of virtually unregulated product claims, certifications, green marketing, and greenwash. Developing a Standard Evidence-based Patient Room Interior Design Checklist and Evaluation ToolA growing body of empirical evidence indicates that well-designed built environments play a critical role in keeping patients safe and enhancing the quality of patient care. Although substantial evidence is available to inform patient room design, research findings are often too technical for design practitioners to understand, interpret and apply in their projects. One major barrier to making research actionable is the lack of design and evaluation tools that are based on evidence, easy to use for translating research into design, and readily available to design professionals. A patient room interior design checklist and evaluation tool can address this critical need in the industry by providing access to the healthcare design evidence base in an accessible and actionable format. Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum DisorderSupport for independent living has been instigated and focused on the creation of communities with “village” like atmospheres to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) transition from their homes more smoothly. This grounded theory research examined how people with I/IDD use their senses to comprehend their physical surroundings and perform tasks of daily living. Five intentional housing and work communities for this population was examined and analyzed to inform the design of optimum communities. Six themes were developed into a neuro– considerate environmental design model suggesting guidelines for the design of both residential and work environments that accommodate this group’s needs. Key Performance Indicators of Knowledge Workplace Design Promoting Knowledge Worker Performance and Economic CompetitivenessAccording to the U.S. Department of Commerce, innovation is a key driver of economic competitiveness. It allows knowledge workplaces to exceed growth beyond inputs by producing new or significantly improved products or services that create new values of customers or financial returns for the company with less inputs than in the traditional economy. It is important to design and manage knowledge-intensive organizations by supporting key performance indicators (KPIs) of the physical work environment that enhance the capacity of the innovative performance of the organization. From Learning Commons to Learning Communities: Examining the Role of Mixed-Use Learning Zones in Millennial EducationThe role of interior design in higher education has perhaps never been more important than it is today. New approaches to pedagogy and a generation of students who expect a less didactic and non-hierarchical learning experience have compelled administrators to rethink their facilities. New directions include “mixed-use” spaces supporting a wider spectrum of student-based engagement. This study explores student reactions to mixed-use learning environments intended to better support millennial ways of thinking and doing. Access research.
Personalized Learning, Personalized Space: How Design Can Enhance Learning, and Overall Wellbeing, To Support the One-Size-Fits-OneThe CADRE research team developed a sensory design lab to track psychophysiological changes in a controlled space, specifically enabling the analysis of the effects of interior elements on students within a learning environment. The 10’ x 10’x 8’ agnostic prototype was installed in the Dallas Independent School District High School that supports personalized learning, and allowed for 30-minute study sessions with groups of up to three students tracking sound, light, temperature, humidity, participant location, movements, and heart rate. Behavioral data was collected manually, and a personalization index offered a means for assessing degrees of personalizing the space. Access research.
