Interior Design Resilience: From Individual to Community

Susanne Angarano is a principal at Vaysen Studio and Ashley McGraw Architects. Her extensive experience includes a focus on learning environment strategy and design and holistic sustainable design work. For every project, Susanne works with stakeholders to transform environments and to cultivate symbiotic relationships between humans and nature. Capturing intangible qualities in a tangible way is why she is an exceptional designer and facilitator, always seeking to dig deeper into culture and context, to uncover and realize project and stakeholder potential. Susanne is the recipient of the 2019 ASID Ones to Watch award, and her interior design work on MacArthur Elementary school was awarded the 2019 ASID Outcome of Design honorable mention.  

Dr. Upali Nanda is Principal and Director of Research for global architectural firm HKS, where she spearheads research projects globally. She also serves as Executive Director for the non-profit Center for Advanced Design Research and Education and teaches as Associate Professor of Practice at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at University of Michigan. She serves on the board of directors for HKS and the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture. Her doctoral work on “Sensthetics” has been published as a book available on Amazon.com. Her award-winning research has been widely published and cited in peer-reviewed journals and mainstream media. In 2015, Upali was recognized as one of the top 10 most influential people in Healthcare Design by Healthcare Design magazine. In 2018, she was honored by Architectural Record with the Women in Architecture Innovator Award.  In 2019, she was recognized as one of nine people shaping American design by Specify Magazine from Metropolis.

Leigh is a design leader and workplace strategy expert who has dedicated her career to partnering with clients to create inspiring, sustainable and high-performing workplaces that facilitate collaboration, enhance wellness, and improve productivity. In addition to her innovative design work, Leigh is the Managing Principal for EYP’s Washington, D.C. office and thought leader in workplace wellness. A researcher and author, Leigh shares her expertise and latest findings at major industry events, and major publications, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and CNN. 

Stacy Shoemaker Rauen is Senior Vice President of the Design Group at Emerald, a leading tradeshow and media company. At Emerald, she oversees multiple brands in the healthcare, hospitality, commercial, and residential design spheres, including Hospitality Design magazine and HD Expo; Contract magazine; ICFF; Boutique Design magazine and BDNY; Environments for Aging magazine and EFA Expo & Conference; and Healthcare Design magazine and HCD Expo & Conference. A well-respected and talented editor and writer, Stacy is the editor in chief of Hospitality Design magazine and vice president of the Hospitality Design (HD) Group. Stacy—who has been with the company for 17 years—is a noted speaker at industry events and an avid tracker of trends, places, projects and people. She has been quoted in various respected media outlets, including CNBC and the Washington Post. She holds two degrees from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, including a master's degree in magazine journalism.
