    Alejandra Martinez Dunphy is the founder and design director of A+D Studio, an Atlanta based interior design studio that specializes in residential and commercial interiors. A+D Studio portfolio consists of projects throughout the Southeast and internationally. Alejandra is a licensed interior designer with the state of Georgia, and a LEED accredited professional with over 20 years of design expertise. Prior to founding her studio, Alejandra worked for leading architectural and interior design firms where she worked on hospitality, Workplace, K-12 Education, Higher Education and Government projects. She is passionate about design, sustainability, and education. In addition to managing her projects, she has been teaching Interior Design at her alma mater, SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design), in Atlanta for over 7 years. Alejandra has been recognized with several design awards, including the ASID Georgia Chapter 2021 Design Excellence Award for Office Design, and 2022 Design Excellence Award for Restaurant Design and Office Design categories; 2022 SEDY Southeast Designers and Architect of the Year finalist, Contract Category. Holley is the author of the book, “Becoming a Green Building Professional”.

    Dr. Dawn Haynie offers a distinctive, interdisciplinary approach to design. She has extensive experience as a researcher, practitioner, and educator across the disciplines of urban design, architecture, interiors, and graphic design. Her work combines research-based strategies with the lessons learned though her years of professional practice to enhance the spatial experience. Before founding Detailed Designs, a R&D consulting firm, she was a senior level designer at ASD | SKY, managing multiple teams to support some of the largest legal and accounting firms in the country. In her practice, she has worked collaboratively to design and implement both new and repositioned projects across different markets – workplace, healthcare, hospitality, and more recently, single-family residential. She is a Research Fellow for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), managing both their internal and external research on the interior design industry. She is a research consultant for a large, interdisciplinary architectural firm in Atlanta, helping them develop a more rigorous research approach and utilize findings in the literature to better inform their design solutions. She is an adjunct professor at Georgia State University, teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. She enjoys sharing her interdisciplinary approach with students and finds joy in seeing students explore new ideas, test established boundaries, and become more critical, creative, and collaborative. Dr. Haynie has a Ph.D. in Architecture, Culture, & Behavior from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University. Her research has been published and presented internationally, and she was recognized by ULI Atlanta in their inaugural 2020 class of The Leaders. She is passionate about the power of design, and she believes an interdisciplinary, research-based approach enriches results.

    Description

    Benefit from research exploring older adults’ perceptions and attitudes toward currently available interior design features and assistive technologies that support active living at home. You will learn about assistive technology solutions to support four active living categories: housekeeping; environmental controls; safety and security; and environmental adaptations, in addition to comprehensive smart home/home automation systems. In addition, receive hands-on guidance in applying accessible online tools in your research on assistive technology design solutions. This course presents an overview and findings from a study conducted by Virginia Tech, funded by the ASID Foundation Transform Grant. 


    What You Will Learn
    • Identify currently available design and ambient assistive technologies that can support active living in residential environments of older adults 
    • Recognize which design features and/or assistive technologies may be more appropriate for different older adult populations based on income or ability level 
    • Describe how research studying policy and design process decisions can apply to the larger design community. 
    • Utilize the interactive data visualizations to make informed design decisions on home-based technologies.

    Elif Tural, Ph.D., WELL AP, LEED Green Assoc. is an Assistant Professor of Interior Design in Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design. Dr. Tural received her Ph.D. in Environmental Design and Planning from Arizona State University. Her multidisciplinary design education includes an MFA in Interior Architecture, and a B.Arch. Her research interests include design factors for health and active living with a focus on senior residential environments and lighting design. As the 2017 Edison Price Fellow of the Nuckolls Fund, Dr. Tural worked at Oculus Lighting Studio, a Los Angeles-based architectural lighting design firm to enhance her research and teaching in the field of lighting design. She holds WELL AP and LEED credentials, and is a member of EDRA, IDEC, and IESNA.

    Benjamin trained in England, obtaining a BA Hons from Kingston University. After several years working at a London boutique architectural firm, he became the youngest associate in the firm’s history. In 1987 he moved to New York and founded his own interior design studio. In the 34 years since founding his studio, Benjamin has fully renovated a great variety of properties for his clients, including Hamptons houses, a 15-bedroom ski chateau, brownstones, numerous Manhattan apartments, and an art gallery. Benjamin has also trained and taught at a wide variety of Feng Shui Schools, developing and practicing his unique style of Feng Shui. Benjamin has a long history of volunteering within the New York interior design community in a wide variety of roles with ASID and Interior Designers for Legislation in NY (IDLNY). In addition, he co-chaired the CIDQ Committee that developed the NCIDQ Ambassador program. As former president of the ASID Metro New York Chapter (2020-21), he now serves as an advisor on the FY22 Chapter Support Team and is the chair of the Ethics & Professional Responsibility Committee of the ASID Advocate by Design Council.

    Robin Anderson is an adult education and online learning professional with over 15 years of experience in teaching and learning methods, instructional design, educational research and learning theory, and program management in higher education institutions and non-profit organizations. Her experience with non-profit organizations ranges from committee work and volunteering to leading a national board of trustees. She has presented nationally at conferences and workshops for her research in experiential and transformative learning methods efficacy.

    Robin holds an M.Ed. in Adult Education and Training from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, and specialty certifications in Ergonomics Assessment, and Quality Matters Online Learning Standards.     What we don’t accept 

    ASID follows the IDCEC guidelines to determine CEU eligibility. The following types of activities are typically not approved by ASID Education:

    • Proprietary product-oriented material and promotion of products or services, including factory tours. Any courses from manufacturers must be generic and not specific to their product line. 
    • Credentialing exam preparation courses such as those for NCIDQ, LEED or WELL. 
    • Trips or tours to places of interest, except for educational lectures provided at museums or other cultural institutions which are led by qualified instructors and directly relate to design. Self-guided tours are not accepted

    Darrin Brooks, ASID, IIDA, IDEC

    Darrin Brooks is a professor of interior design in the interior architecture and design department at Utah State University. His research at Utah State identifies branding strategies relating to the décor changes in the Oval Office from 1934 to the present. In 2018 Brooks received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Caine College of the Arts. His mantra is “design like you give a damn,” and his work shows his commitment to interior design education and practice. He is a designer and owner of Brooks Design Associates, a firm specializing in both residential and commercial interior design. Brooks served two terms as President ASID’s Intermountain Chapter. In 2008, Brooks was one of four founding members of Ideal For Utah or IDEAL (Interior Design Education and Legislation), which is a coalition established to protect rights and establish licensing for interior designers in the State of Utah. In 2016 Utah become 27th State to adopt Interior Design Legislation. Brooks’ design work has received numerous awards from ASID and IIDA and his work has been presented in several juried shows. In addition, his work has appeared in various magazines and journals such as Bedroom and Bath, Journal of Interior Design, Sources and Design, Southern Accents, Vermont, and Greenwich.

    Nicole Cecil has been a leader in the Interior Design Industry with over 25 years of experience. She has held a position as a Project Manager for over a decade at The University of Idaho, City of Nampa and currently at the State of Idaho. For 15 years she was a lead Interior Designer in private practice at an Architecture and Engineering firm in which she has experience in all areas of Contract Design. Ms. Cecil strives to not only help create environments that are aesthetically pleasing, but more importantly function and are maintainable for years to come.  Her desire is to help people feel productive, healthy and satisfied in their interior spaces. Ms. Cecil has also served as an educator and volunteer at the collegiate level and currently serves as a CIDA Site Visitor, ASID Chapter Director, and Interior Designers of Idaho Board Member. She has served on multiple boards, including ASID Intermountain Chapter (2015, 2016, 2017,  2022) and as a Board of Director at an Architecture and Engineering Firm (CSHQA 2019). Ms. Cecil has also served as a ASID Chapter Support Team member overseeing (7) California Chapters (2017-2019). She has served as an NCIDQ Exam Writer (2012), Professional Advisor for a local High School (2009-2011) and as a Juror for the Interior Designers of Idaho Chair Affair (2016, 2022).

    Kaye Christiansen Englert has always believed in advancing the profession of interior design through education, experience, examination and licensing. Kaye holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Interior Design and Advertising Design and has practiced Interior Design for over 40 years, creating timeless, published and award winning designs; transforming spaces and impacting lives. She founded Christiansen Englert Design Associates in 1987 and later incorporated as Design Plus, Inc. in 1996. Kaye served as ASID Chapter President for two consecutive terms in 1985 and 1986. She served on the National Board of Directors of ASID in 1986 and then served a two-year term on the National Board of Directors in 1987-1988. She also served on the Executive Committee of ASID as the Rocky Mountain Regional Vice President in 1987-1988. Kaye is a Fellow of ASID, the Society’s highest honor and currently serves as the Intermountain Chapter Government and Public Affairs Chair. Kaye has advocated for licensing for the interior design profession throughout her  career and co-founded IDEAL for Utah (Interior Design Education And Legislation) an independent coalition in 2008. She initiated and was instrumental in the successful passage of Senate Bill 117 in Utah in 2016 and is now a Certified Commercial Interior Designer, licensed in the State of Utah, with permitting privileges.

    Madeline Randolfi is a certified interior designer at Cushing Terrell in Billings, Montana. Her portfolio spans a variety of vertical markets including commercial interiors, education, and healthcare working with local, regional, and international clients. Apart from her career as an interior designer, Madeline is also a cultural ambassador at Cushing Terrell. Her role consists of influencing the experience of new team members, while also supporting the firm's involvement in local communities and across digital platforms through social media. In 2018 Madeline was selected as a rising star to participate in the TransFORM Workshop presented by Design Milk and Patcraft, an immersive forum focusing on design and creativity held in Los Angeles, California. Outside of the studio, Madeline finds inspiration in cooking, baking, traveling, and backpacking in Montana's beautiful backcountry.

    Hannah Wiser, Allied ASID

    Hannah Wiser began her journey with ASID at East Carolina University. She volunteered as treasurer and president for the ECU Student Chapter while earning top of class for both her BS in Interior Design and MS in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics. Hannah continued with ASID as a design research intern, working with Susan Chung, former VP of Research, at ASID headquarters. She also interned with Aviva Stanoff Design during two seasons of High Point Market. Hannah has since worked as a consultant for commercial banking clients at Financial Risk Group in Cary, NC. She specialized in technical communication and documentation, completing projects that range from coding to data strategy transformation. Hannah is now a founding partner of a mentorship business focused on personal and professional development programs. She currently serves as the Professional Development Director for the ASID Carolinas Chapter.

    Benjamin Huntington, FASID, NCIDQ, NYS CID (Moderator)

    Benjamin trained in England, obtaining a BA Hons from Kingston University. After several years working at a London boutique architectural firm, he became the youngest associate in the firm’s history. In 1987 he moved to New York and founded his own interior design studio. In the 34 years since founding his studio, Benjamin has fully renovated a great variety of properties for his clients, including Hamptons houses, a 15-bedroom ski chateau, brownstones, numerous Manhattan apartments, and an art gallery. Benjamin has also trained and taught at a wide variety of Feng Shui Schools, developing and practicing his unique style of Feng Shui. Benjamin has a long history of volunteering within the New York interior design community in a wide variety of roles with ASID and Interior Designers for Legislation in NY (IDLNY). In addition, he co-chaired the CIDQ Committee that developed the NCIDQ Ambassador program. As former president of the ASID Metro New York Chapter (2020-21), he now serves as an advisor on the FY22 Chapter Support Team and is the chair of the Ethics & Professional Responsibility Committee of the ASID Advocate by Design Council.

    Britt began her design career as a decorative painter. Her love of color and texture is reflected in many different facets of her work in homes and offices across the country. An honors graduate from the New York School of Interior Design, she began her work in a Manhattan-based boutique design firm, then moved on to start her own business, Britt Newman Design Concepts LLC. Launched in 2007, BNDC has made its mark in everything from large, full-scale residential projects and church sanctuaries, to smaller, more intimate spaces, including executive offices and bachelor pads. As an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), and the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), Britt brings to the table a unique set of combined skills that provide clients with living spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

    Lynn Vogeltanz, ASID, NCIDQ

    Lynn Vogeltanz earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Mary College in Interior Design. Since graduation, Lynn has focused her energy on the creating spaces, developing relationships, and servicing the design community. Her first position was an interior designer at Schroeder Solution where she focused on corporate spaces, and she then spent almost 14 years at Direct Supply. Lynn was dedicated to improving communities for seniors, their families, and caregivers as an interior designer and then as a team lead. During this time, she served the profession as the ASID Wisconsin Chapter President, and as Director at Large on the ASID National Board of Directors. Her career path took a new direction when Lynn accepted a position with EF Contract Flooring as Account Executive. Lynn partners with designers, architects, dealers, and end users to help provide the best flooring solutions to make their projects successful. She continues to be active in the local design community by working with professional associations and colleges as she fulfills her national committee roles with ASID. Currently, Lynn is Co-Chair of the ASID Wisconsin Chapter Government Affairs Committee, where they succeeded in passing Stamp and Seal Legislation in Spring 2022.

    Solve design challenges and learn key on-the-job skills to benefit you in your first professional role.

    Internships give you the opportunity to work directly with practitioners to solve design problems, exchange ideas, and see how they would approach a solution. The Problem-Solving Scenarios give you a similar opportunity to tackle on-the-job challenges, designing solutions that incorporate your knowledge of codes in the construction process. Provided by practitioners from the ASID Advocate by Design Council, the scenarios represent the type of tasks typically assigned to new designers, giving you a valuable chance to practice what you’ve learned in school.

    Creating spaces that celebrate heritage and tradition is a professional passion Dana has pursued for the past 17 years as an interior designer and project manager for community-centered healthcare, education, and public projects in over 93 cities and villages throughout Alaska. In her work, Dana ensures that the cultural identity of the people and place is honored in integrated design solutions. Her designs focus on creating optimal user experiences, considering function, sustainability, wellness, and appropriateness in Alaska’s harsh climates and remote locales. Dana’s ASID involvement began as a student. She has since served as Alaska chapter president, twice, and nationally on the Chapter Support Team. She currently serves on ASID’s standing Construction Codes and Standards Committee, is involved in the Alaska chapter’s advocacy efforts for interior design registration, fulfills administrative needs for the Alaska chapter, and volunteers as a CIDA Site Visitor.
